Weather Averages in Memphis

In this article, we shall talk about the weather and climate of Memphis, Tennessee.

Memphis has a humid subtropical climate (in Köppen that’s Cfa), with four distinct seasons, and is located in USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7b.

Winter weather comes alternately from the upper Great Plains and the Gulf of Mexico, which can lead to major swinging in temperatures.

Summer weather may come from Texas (very hot and humid) or the Gulf (hot and very humid). July has an average daily temperature of 82.7 °F (28.2 °C), with high levels of humidity due to moisture coming from the Gulf of Mexico.

Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are quite common during the summer, but these are usually brief, lasting no longer than an hour at most.

Early autumn is pleasantly drier and mild, but can be sweltering until late October. Late autumn on the other hand is rainy and cooler; precipitation peaks again in November and December.

Ice storms and freezing rain pose greater danger to anyone travelling to the city during the winter season, as they can often pull tree limbs down on power lines and make driving hazardous due to slippery roads.

Severe thunderstorms can occur at any time of the year though these happen mainly during the spring months. Large hail, strong winds, flooding and frequent lightning can accompany these storms. Occasionally, storms can spawn tornadoes.
